A more detailed summary of the education system in Sierra Leone is as follows. According to the law, children should attend six years of primary school and three years of junior secondary school, but this is not possible due to the insufficient number of schools and teachers in the country. The civil war that lasted from 1991 to 2002 devastated the education sector and left many schools destroyed and many children out of school. Since the end of the war, there has been some progress in rebuilding schools and increasing primary school enrollment, which doubled from 34% in 2001 to 68% in 2005. However, secondary school enrollment remains very low, with only 17% of primary school graduates enrolling in junior secondary school and only 8% enrolling in senior secondary school in 2004. The main challenges facing the education system are the lack of qualified teachers, the low quality of education, the high dropout rates, gender disparities, and the limited resources.
